چکیده

Phage are the most abundant biological entities in the biosphere, with an estimated 10 particles on the planet. They also play a major role in carbon cycling; at least 25% of fixed carbon passes through phage. Their roles as predators of bacteria have important implications for possible marine CO2 sequestration. Metagenomic analyses show that the rank-abundance curve for marine phage communities follows a power law distribution. This distribution is consistent with a proposed, modified version of Lotka-Volterra predator-prey dynamics, where blooms of a specific microbial species lead to blooms of their corresponding phage and a subsequent decrease in abundance. The model predicts that the majority of phage genotypes in a population will be rare and it is unlikely that the most abundant phage genotype will be the same at different time points. The model is based on spatial-temporal heterogeneity and a power law phage decay, which are both supported by empirical data.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Liza klunzingeri from the Northern Persian Gulf Based on AFLP Analysis

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity and population structure of Liza klunzingeri in two regions of the Persian Gulf. In this study, the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was employed to analyze population genetic diversity between two populations (Ziyarat & Hendijan). Seven primer combinations (E-AAG/M-CTA, E-ACT/ M-CAA, E-ACT/ M-CTA, E-AAG/M-CTG,...

Discovery of Novel Peptidomimetics for Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor using Phage Display Technology

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a neuroprotectant candidate for neurodegenerative diseases. However, there are several clinical concerns about its therapeutic applications. In the current study, we selected BDNF-mimicking small peptides from phage-displayed peptide library as alternative molecules to the clinical challenges. The peptide library was screened against BDNF receptor (Ne...

Comparative Phylogenetic Perspectives on the Evolutionary Relationships in the Brine Shrimp Artemia Leach, 1819 (Crustacea: Anostraca) Based on Secondary Structure of ITS1 Gene

This is the first study on phylogenetic relationships in the genus Artemia Leach, 1819 using the pattern and sequence of secondary structures of internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1). Significant intraspecific variation in the secondary structure of ITS1 rRNA was found in Artemia tibetiana. In the phylogenetic tree based on joined primary and secondary structure sequences, Artemia urmiana and pa...

Genetic Population Structure of Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricta) Using Microsatellite Analysis

Information on the genetic structure of marine species is essential for stock improvement programs. In orderto analyses the genetic diversity of the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricte) by the microsatellite geneticmethod, 64 samples were caught from the beaches located in Kish and Qeshm islands. Polymerase chainreactions (PCR) of genomic DNA extracted from the samples wer...
